For, the was an inseparable part of his life growing up. Today, he cannot think of life without it. “You will find harmonicas everywhere in my home — on the sofa, in the cupboard, on the dining table and even on my bed,” he says, surrounded by mouth organs of all shapes and sizes at his Pimple-Saudagar home.
This fascination with harmonicas prompted him to collect more than 50 pieces of rare and antique varieties, from the 1896 Harmonette — made from maple wood — to a 1925 hand-crank Rolomonica, made from Bakelite. He also has a large collection of basic 10-hole as well as customised harmonicas. “I especially like to collect ones with some history,” says, picking up a palm-sized 1896 US Marine Band harmonica — his first acquisition, over 15 years ago.
Gleaming under the tubelight, the 121-year-old intrument, made by M. Honer — the king of harmonica makers — looks as good as new.

“I still have the original box as well as the manual and rid notes,” he says, barely able to contain his excitement. Patil, a music teacher by profession, got hooked to harmonicas while he was in Class IX or X, when he saw one at a fair in his native village of Nizampur in district. “I was learning classical music at the time, and had fair knowledge of other musical instruments. But I found the harmonica unlike any other instrument. I was completely smitten,” he recalls. His fascination with the instrument soon turned into an obsession. He read whatever material was available on harmonicas and began sourcing old, rare, mouth organs through contacts abroad.

Patil’s incredible collection includes 10-hole diatonic instruments favoured by country, blues, and pop musicians; tremolos that produce an echo effect for folk music, and 12-note chromatics designed for classical and jazz music. But one of the rarest items in his collection is a 1912 Trumpet Call harmonica, long-prized as one of the most beautiful harmonicas in the world, with its combination of five trumpet bells, solid brass reed plates and wood resonator box that giving it its unique sound. Then there’s the Chordomonica II, a 12-hole slide mouth organ with six different chords and two sliders, designed for chords. Discontinued in the 1980s, there are but a few surviving working specimens.
His other treasures include a 24-hole wheel-shaped tremolo harmonica, comprising five harmonicas with different scales. “I got this directly from China,” he says. One of the costliest in his kitty is the, the first serial-produced chromatic harp with stainless steel reeds. “This cost around Rs 29,000, but I didn’t have to pay a penny as it was sponsored by the company distributor,” says Patil.
Among the notables in his breathtaking array is the Beaver brand’s ‘University Chimes’ bell harmonica, a rage between 1910 and 1931. He also boasts of a 10-hole diatonic Suzuki Pipe Humming harmonica, a unique instrument with a cylindrical design. He also has a gold-plated Double Puck harmonica that was popular in the 1920s for its two back-to-back petite-sized harmonicas. Then there are vintage Ecophone Harmonica (so called as it produces an echo effect), Japanese Tombo Harmonica, and many more.
